1996 One Design 48 (1D48)

Chayah was a 1996 Tillotson Pearson One Design 48 (1D48), designed by Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design as a purpose-built high-performance racing yacht. The 48-footer measures 48.42 feet overall, with a 14.17-foot beam and 10.08-foot draft. Her lightweight carbon/Kevlar composite construction, carbon spar, deep lead-bulb keel and water ballast were designed to produce exceptional performance while maintaining the close competition of one-design racing. Only eight 1D48s were built, making the class a relatively rare chapter in the history of American grand-prix yacht racing.

For much of her Southern California racing career, Chayah was campaigned by Oscar Krinsky and Chris Redman, carrying sail number 48001. She became a formidable presence in the region’s Fast 50 fleet, winning her class at the inaugural First Team Real Estate Invitational Regatta in 2005 and continuing to perform strongly against larger racing yachts. In the 2006 Ullman Inshore Series she finished second overall in the Fast 50 fleet, and in 2008 she won a Cal Race Week race outright against boats including a Reichel/Pugh 50, Davidson 51 and Santa Cruz 70. Her offshore résumé included the Newport-to-Ensenada Race and the 2009 Border Run, where she finished second in PHRF AA with a corrected time of 11:23:30.
